Stowood Scientific Instruments Ltd (Stowood), established in 1992, is a group of bioengineering, hardware and software specialists collaborating in developments for medical sleep studies. The company is privately owned, independent and technically orientated, with a wealth of experience of hospitals and medical equipment. Stowood focuses on customer service and ensuring that its products are appropriate for purpose rather than solely dictated by reimbursement rules.
Stowood was founded by Lyn Davies, a bioengineering PhD with years of experience in the NHS at Nottingham’s University, Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospitals, and in industry. Between 1984 and 1992, when working as the Research and Technical Manager at Oxford Medical – then the UK’s primary manufacturer of ambulatory and neurophysiological monitoring equipment, he developed an interest in sleep. Lyn founded Stowood in August 1992, initially to develop the Visi-Lab for sleep apnoea/ PLMS screening as a more appropriate alternative to full polysomnography. Prior to Lyn’s premature death in May 2013 he made a plan for Stowood to continue in the spirit that has always underpinned the business, and his successors are determined to maintain that spirit.
